The 4 most common homeowners insurance claims

Homeowners insurance is supposed to make sure your house gets necessary repairs if it is ever damaged by the elements. Some forms of damage are more common than others, as TIME recently reported.

An article in the magazine discussed information released by Travelers Insurance about the most common types of claims it receives. Here they are:

  • Wind is the most common source of damage. High winds can damage your roof, skylights and walls by knocking over trees or tree limbs, or sending objects like patio furniture flying through your windows.
  • Water is another common problem for homeowners. People who live in flood zones are especially vulnerable, though water main sand or nearby lakes can also lead to water damage. As a reminder, in Minnesota homeowners often must purchase separate flood coverage.
  • Fires can be devastating to a home if not contained in time. Faulty or damaged wiring can cause a fire, as can kitchen grease and dryer vents and filters clogged with lint.
  • Theft makes up just 6 percent of homeowners insurance claims, but is still a significant problem.

Damage to your home can turn your world upside down. It can render the home uninhabitable, and take months to repair. The last thing you need is a rejected claim from your insurance company, especially when the insurance company did not even consider your claim in good faith.

When this happens, you need an attorney experienced in homeowners insurance matters on your side to get the money you are entitled to.
