Are you really covered by your homeowners policy?

When you own a home, you have a great many expenses. Insurance, while necessary, is not much fun. If you have no claims, you may feel as if you are wasting money, since there is no return on your investment. With all of your other expenses, you may want to place the minimum you would potentially need to replace your home in a worst case scenario.

The risk may be that when you move into a new home, you may lose track of time. With home values rebounding, you could see a reasonable appreciation of your home value on a yearly basis.

There is also the question of the contents of your home. If you moved in when you were young and maybe newly married, you probably did not have many possessions. But after living in a home 10 or 20 years, you may have noticed, if only subconsciously, that there just seems to be less room than there once was.

In Minnesota, with the return of summer and thunderstorm season, homeowners are once again facing the threat of dangerous and damaging storms appearing at any time of the day or night. The state has escaped large-scale damage from devastating tornados, but there have been numerous examples of very severe, often localized violent storms with torrential rainfall, hail and extreme winds, resulting in significant property damage.

If your dwelling were to be damaged, would your current policy be adequate? The cost of building supplies likely have increased since your home was built. Would your policy cover that increase? What about your contents? If severe wind damage tore part of the roof off of your home, much of your personal possession could be ruined.

Making sure your policy matches your current level of possession and valuation of your property can help prevent insurance disputes should the worst-case scenario every occur.
